“It may be chilly outside when Valentine's Day comes, but little bears warm up and send cards to their chums.”
Opening quote

The Berenstain Bears' Funny Valentine is a book in The Berenstain Bears series. It was published on December 24, 2002.

Summary[]

Valentine's Day is coming up and Sister has to write a valentine card. However, she gets a secret admirer, who happens to be Billy Grizzwold, Sister's least favorite classmate.

Plot[]

As Sister and her friends jump rope at recess, a boy cub named Billy Grizzwold walks toward the girls and starts to jump rope with them. Billy trips on the jump rope and both he and the girls all fall down. Sister angrily chased after Billy, who ran even faster than her. Back in Teacher Jane's classroom, she announces to the class that they are having a Valentine's Day party and asks her students to make valentines for each other. Sister sits in her desk slumping.

At home, Sister was thinking about what she should place on her valentine card as Brother gets two calls from his friends Bonnie and Jill. Mama reminds Sister that there is nothing wrong with boys and girls being friends, and Papa reminds her that Teacher Jane's valentine party is coming up, prompting Sister to think about what to put down on her valentine card for Billy. Sister tells Mama about all the mean things Billy did such as knocking her down while jumping rope, chase after her with a dead mouse, and put a hop toad in her lunchbox. Brother, who just got off the phone, returns and tells Sister to ask Herbie Cubbison to get Billy to leave her alone. A small argument between them embroils, with Papa shushing them.

At the store, Sister buys a monster valentine card and signs "Guess Who" on it. Later, Teacher Jane's class has a valentine party and Sister receives a card from Herbie that's decorated with flowers and hearts. Lizzy tells her that Herbie got the card for her. Sister walks over to the punch bowl to thank Herbie, but Billy gets in her way and apologizes for all the hurtful things he did to her. Sister is taken by surprise when Billy tells her that the valentine card she got was from him. He found Sister's valentine to be funny.

That evening, Sister, who was still confused, shows Mama the valentine card Billy got her. Mama sympathizes with Sister, as when she was her age, there was a boy cub who did the same things to Sister, except with a thousand-legger and a bullfrog. She and Sister both look at Papa, who had his face buried in the newspaper. At recess the next day, Billy invites Sister to sit together at the school assembly the next day. She agreed to this, and Billy promises not to bring any worms or toads.
