Plot[]
Brother, Sister, Stewart and Sally are walking home from school. They say goodbye to Stewart and Sally and then, they walk home. When they get home, Papa and Mama are excited about school closing for the summer, while, Brother and Sister feel sad that Stewart and Sally are moving away. Both Brother and Sister express that they hate change and while Mama and Papa express that change is a part of life, Sister states that she wants to live in the same house they've always lived in. At the mention of this, Mama explains they didn't always live there as it turns out they used to live up in the mountains, Brother was still a small cub and Sister wasn't born yet, she asks if that is true. So, Mama and Papa bring in a scrapbook and it shows Mama, Papa and Brother up in Great Bear Mountain. They had such a wonderful time there, especially Brother who loved collecting rocks and seeing all the animals.
Sister would really like to know what it's like living in Great Bear Mountain and Brother asked why they moved. Papa said as time went by, things changed and they outgrew their cozy cave. A flashback shows Papa making a chair, but, there was less wood, in fact now it's just pieces in the woodpile and the saplings he planted still haven't grown. Papa realized that the mountain soil is too thin to grow trees and not having many trees is hard for him. Mama also realized that their garden is small and Brother's growing, so she would have to make the garden larger, but, there are rocks in the way.
Later that night, Mama and Papa told Brother that they're moving to a new house and Brother was worried about this and asks why and Bother is sad. Both Papa and Mama explain that they need more wood for Papa's work, Mama needs a bigger garden and even Brother needs a new space as well. Brother expresses worry about moving as he loves their home and doesn't want to leave his animal friends, Mama assures him they're sad about moving g to but they'll make new memories at their new home. Mama explains that they outgrew their cave and they moved down to the valley and their family is about to get bigger, with a new baby on the way. Sister realized that she was the new baby, Mama explains that they packed their things into boxes and then, they moved. The next flashback shows Mama, Papa and Brother moving to an abandoned tree, so, they decide to decorate it. Before long they have a bigger garden, enough wood and Brother starts school with Cousin Fred and quite sometime later, Sister was born. Brother and Sister now understand that change is good and decide to go see Sally and Stewart. The cubs assure their friends that while change may be hard it is good, both Sally and Stewart agree that this will be good and look forward to it.
