The Berenstain Bears Go to the Movies is the first segment of the fourth episode in season three of The Berenstain Bears. It first aired on April 5, 2004 and is based on the Board Book of the same name.
Summary[]
When the Bear Family isn't spending much time together anymore, Mama proposes they have an outing to try and spend time together.
Plot[]
One morning at breakfast, Sister tells Mama that ballet class is in twenty minutes as she eats a waffle, Brother tells her that soccer practice is in ten minutes after drinking some orange juice. Papa kisses Mama, then juggles a hot muffin as he and the cubs all leave the kitchen. Mama then decides to do something about the family spending time together on Saturday as she and Little Lady eat a waffle.
Later, Papa finds a note on his workshop door, Brother finds a note in his baseball glove, and Sister finds a note on the seat of her bicycle. In the living room, the Bear family has a meeting, Mama tells them that she called the meeting because nobody in the family does things together anymore, and Papa adds that it's hard to find the time. Mama suggests a special picnic for next Saturday and it excites the family, only for Brother to say that he and his Bear Scout troops are having a charity carwash, Sister has to go to her best friend's birthday, and Papa says that he has to finish making Squire Grizzly's end tables. He then suggests that the family should spend time after that, and Brother adds that they should go see a movie. Mama is hesitant about the idea, as they would sit in a dark room eating popcorn, but agrees to do it as Brother and Sister give her a hug.
Next Saturday night, as Mama puts on her yellow hat, Brother, Sister, and Papa all head into the foyer and decide on what film to watch. Brother wants to watch Goopy Monsters from the Sewer, and Sister, disgusted by Brother's idea, wants to watch The Ballerina Slipper. Papa wants to watch an action film, but Mama suggests that they should watch a funny film. The family agrees that they can decide on what film to see as they head to the multiplex. Before stepping out the front door, Papa asks if they had seen his car keys.
It then turns into a brief search around the house, with Brother finding his baseball among Mama's yarn balls, Mama and Sister find her charm bracelet underneath a couch cushion, along with one of Little Lady's chew toys. Papa enters the living room and tells them that the car keys were in his overalls' back pocket after sitting down. They head out the front door, and Papa tells Mama and the cubs that he has to drop off the Squire's end tables, but assures that there'll be plenty of time before the movie starts.
At the Squire's house, Papa rings the doorbell, but doesn't get an answer and heads to the backyard. Brother goes to find Papa. In the backyard, Papa and Brother are started by an owl and a cat's meow, prompting both of them to walk backwards and bump into each other. At the family car, Mama and Sister were stargazing and a firefly, which Sister mistakes for an actual star, lands on her nose. Papa and Brother return to the family car laughing and tell Mama about the looks they saw on each other's faces.
While driving to the movie theater, the car stops because Papa forgot to get gas. He and Sister walk to the nearby gas station to get gas while Mama and Brother stay behind and say "Rubber buggy baby bumpers". Meanwhile, Papa shows Sister how to whistle with a blade of grass, but they are interrupted as Mrs. Grizzle drives toward them in her car. She gives Papa and Sister a lift to the gas station. Back at the family car, Mama and Brother play "I Spy" as Mrs. Grizzle drives toward them. As Brother gives Percy to Mrs. Grizzle, Papa loads the car up with gas and prepares to drive to the movie theater, but it suddenly starts to rain. Papa and the cubs try to pull the top up, but it doesn't move. Papa then mentions seeing umbrellas in the trunk, and he drives to the movie theater as everyone has them open over their heads while Papa slowly drives to the theater.
After they arrive at the movie theater, the ticketmaster tells them that the movies are sold out and pulls down a shade. The Bear family is disappointed, but they realize that they had special family time of their own, making Mama realize that they don't have to go anywhere just to spend time together. Back at the Bear family treehouse, they watch home videos on a film projector.
