The Berenstain Bears and the Bully is a book in the Berenstain Bear series. It was published on October 19th 1993.[1]

One day Papa, Mama, and Brother Bear are out in the yard when Sister Bear comes home crying with her clothes and hair bow ripped. When Mama and Papa try to ask Sister what happened she doesn't answer, but when Brother suggests that she might of gotten beaten up Sister says that she did get beaten up by a bully named Tuffy. Mama and Papa take Sister into the house and after getting her a glass of water she tells them that she, Lizzy Bruin, and Queenie McBear were playing at the playground when a cub named Tuffy tripped her and when Sister tried to defend herself Tuffy punched her really hard and made her fall on her back and sat on top of her rubbing dirt in her face. Papa is outraged and starts to head out to the playground, but Mama calms him down saying right now they need to tend to Sister.

Meanwhile Brother goes to the playground and finds Lizzy and Queenie and asks them where this Tuffy is (whom Brother thinks is a boy) but Lizzy and Queenie point nervously to the bathrooms to which Brother notices a girl coming out of the bathroom with a shirt that says Tuffy on it. Brother realizes that Tuffy is a girl, about Sister's age. Tuffy learns that Brother is Sister's brother, and she taunts him about her attack on Sister, in an attempt to provoke him, but Brother realizes that he'd be no better than her if he hits the smaller sized Tuffy, and he walks away sadly, to which Tuffy calls him chicken just like his sister. On his way home, Brother stops at school and gets some fighting stuff from the gym. After dinner, he teaches Sister some fighting moves so she can stand up for herself if Tuffy tries to bully her again to which Sister proves to be a good fighter. He still reminds Sister to not go looking for a fight with Tuffy, and only use her moves if Tuffy comes after her first.

On Monday and Tuesday Sister manages to avoid Tuffy, but on Wednesday, she notices Tuffy throwing stones at a baby bird that can't fly yet. When Sister shouts at Tuffy to leave the bird alone Tuffy rushes at her and tries to hit her but Sister ducks and uses her right hand to smack Tuffy on the nose causing it to bleed. Then a recess teacher drags the two to Principal Honeycomb's office. While Sister and Tuffy wait outside the principal's office, Sister sees Tuffy crying, and asks why she's crying, as Sister only hit her once. Tuffy tearfully says that if the principal calls her parents about this, she may not be able to sit down for a long time. This makes Sister wonder if the reason that Tuffy bullies others, is because she gets hit a lot at home by her parents.

In the end, another recess teacher tells the principal that Sister was just trying to protect a baby bird. Principal Honeycomb gets that and lets Sister off with a warning. As for Tuffy, while the principal doesn't call in and tell her parents about what happened, she ends up having to lose a week of lunch recess (all recesses --morning recess and lunch recess). And she is required to visit the school counselor twice a week --for a while afterwards.

Elizabeth ("Lizzy") BruinBrother, there's something you must have--
Brother Bear: {Snapped interruptly} Keep quiet, Lizzy Bruin! Just point who Tuffy is and step aside!

  • This is Tuffy's only appearance
  • This marks the first appearance of Mr. Honeycomb.
  • This in one of few times in a kids book where child abuse is implied.
