“Sometimes little bears' good behavior ends when they pack their pajamas and stay over with friends.”
—Sister Bear
The Berenstain Bears and the Slumber Party is the first segment of the eighth episode in season one of The Berenstain Bears. It first aired on Treehouse TV on September 20, 2002, and later on PBS on January 7, 2003. It is based on the book of the same name.
Summary
Lizzy plans on hosting a sleepover and invites Sister, who learns about privilege and responsibility from Mama. However, word about the slumber party gets around fast, as multiple girls show up to Lizzy's house and cause chaos, as well as Too-Tall and his friends Skuzz and Smirk.
Plot
Lizzy Bruin calls Sister over the phone and invites her to a slumber party that's taking place on Saturday night. Excited, Sister went to the guest room to tell Mama about Lizzy's slumber party and how she, Anna, and Millie will be the only cubs there. At first, Mama is hesitant as Sister had never slept away from home before other than the times she stayed with Gramps and Gran. Sister persuades Mama to let her go, and Mama agrees, but reminds her about privilege and responsibility. Sister immediately responds that she'll be on her best behavior and runs to tell Lizzy.
At school, Sister and Lizzy discuss the slumber party on the playground. However, the other girls overhear about the slumber party and pass notes around about it in class. After school, Queenie hears Too-Tall's boom box and goes over to talk to him. She mentions Lizzy's slumber party, and both Skuzz and Smirk speak up. Queenie tells them it's for girls only and she leaves. Too-Tall, however, insists on going to crash the party with them. On Saturday, Lizzy and Sister take turns talking to several girls over the phone and allowing one after the other to come to her slumber party.
That evening, as Sister packs her sleeping bag and pajamas, Mama and Papa remind her about privilege and responsibility. Mama hands Sister her snack and she races out the front door to Lizzy's house. Just after leaving, Papa asks Mama if she called the Bruins, but she didn't and thought Papa did. As Sister heads off, Papa reminds her of what Mama said about privilege and responsibility, with Sister responding that she knows.
Later at the Bruins' house, Sister runs into Lizzy and a teenage bear named Cindy. Lizzy tells Sister that her parents have gone out for the evening and left Cindy in charge, who adds that since there were only going to be a few girls, it was okay for Lizzy to have her slumber party. Just then, Stacy, Karen, Queenie, and several other girl cubs show up.
The slumber party proceeds with the girls running about the house bumping into things, showering each other with popcorn, and having a pillow fight that causes the pillows to rip and feathers flying about. Queenie opens a can of fizzy grape soda and sprays some on Millie, then some on Cindy as she runs to get ahold of things. Despite being against it initially, Sister becomes swayed to join in on the chaos as one of the girls knocks her down with a pillow. Just then, Too-Tall, Skuzz, and Smirk all show up at the party playing music from Too-Tall's boom box at a high volume, and not long after, things at the party started to spiral out of control. Cindy asks them to turn the volume down, but Too-Tall refuses. Fed up with the antics, Cindy yells out "QUIET!" just as Mr. and Mrs. Bruin come home and look at the mess the girls and Too-Tall's gang made.
The party was then cancelled and the parents came to pick up their cubs. Mama expresses her anger and disappointment in Sister as they walk home. Back at the treehouse, Mama grounds Sister for a day in her room and a week in the house. Sister goes to her room sadly while Mama went into the kitchen to talk to Papa. She explains everything that happened at the slumber party to Papa. Papa acknowledges that while Sister is partly to blame for the mess that was made at the slumber party, he acknowledges that one thing led to another. Mama, however, admits that had they known if Mr. and Mrs. Bruin had gone out, the slumber party would've been postponed or they would've had it at their house.
Papa explains to her that privilege and responsibility doesn't apply to cubs, but to adults as well. Mama agrees, and added that they should've called ahead of time. Sister peeps into the kitchen and asks Mama to cancel the grounding when she admits that what she did at the party was wrong. The next day, several girl cubs call each other over the phone and they meet up at Lizzy's house to help clean up the mess. Lizzy suggests making it a "clean-up party", but Sister objects and tells Lizzy that she doesn't want to hear the word "party" for a long time.
